From November 1914 until March 1918. Both sides were stuck to their trenches to stay protected. No Man's Land was between the two opposing sets of trenches. Troops attacking had to cross. Trenches were protected with thick belts of wire. Easy targets for them were caught in the wire.
Soldiers had to get out of their trenches, get through their own barbed
wire, cross No Man's Land, go through the enemy barbed wire and get safely into their trenches in the position of war. Which was almost imposible. But somehow they did it. Trenches were very muddy and just got worse during the warfare because of the wet climate the had delt with. At times mud got really thick and the men would get barried in it. Dead bodies just layed there on the battlefield. Fecies were because of that. Diseases were spred very easily.
The mud and the cold caused many soldiers to suffer from trench foot.
The mud got into wounds. Trench warfare was very deadly not only because of the war but because the horrible infections and diseases .
At night soldiers had to be sent out on raids across No Man's Land to capture a few Germans. They brought them back as prisoners of war. so that they could be interrogated by MilitarY Intelligence.
Also at night soldiers were ordered to repair trenches, sand bags or wire trenches. This meant going into dangerous places. Enemys would send up flares to show they presense. Headquarters tended to be many miles behind the trenches. A cause of much resentment to the front line soldiers .
